Hopetoun Monument, Byres Hill, West Garleton.
Open daily. Admission free. 7 miles south west of North Berwick, on the A6137. Bus route 121. Path up from small car park to the monument. Erected in 1824 in memory of John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun. Climb 95ft (132 steps) up a dark, narrow, spiral staircase. Uninterrupted views across the Firth of Forth, to Edinburgh, the Pentlands and across the East Lothian countryside.
National Flag Heritage Centre, Athelstaneford Parish Church, Main Street, Athelstaneford, EH39 5BE.
Open daily 9am – 6pm, April to October. Admission free. 6 miles south, in the village of Athelstaneford. Bus route 121. Parking. The Centre is in a lectern doocot, north of the church which was built in 1583. Visitors enjoy an audio-visual dramatisation of the 9th century battle when the St Andrew’s Cross appeared in the sky. The St Andrew’s Cross or Saltire is Scotland’s national flag.

Open 12.30pm – 5pm, Thursday to Monday, from May to September with guided tours only. 8 miles south, on the B1407. On bus route 120. Parking. Preston Mill, with its distinctive Dutch-style conical roof, was East Lothian’s last working water mill. The present buildings date from the 18th century and the beehive-shaped doocot was built in the 16th century to house 500 pigeons.
