WALKS AROUND NORTH BERWICK
The John Muir Way is a Scottish coast-to-coast walk or cycle route from Dunbar to Helensburgh with a total length of around 134 miles. Named in honour of the conservationist and founder of America’s National Parks, John Muir Way runs through North Berwick and is well signed. Either go south from the High Street through the Lodge Grounds, passing the west side of the bottom of the Law and then east on towards Dunbar or head west from the end of Abbotsford Road towards Yellowcraig, Dirleton, Gullane and Aberlady. The John Muir Way walkers’ route is shown on North Berwick Area Maps.
Climb the Law (613ft above sea level). From the High Street go south up Law Road, across the traffic lights at St Baldred’s Road, passed the Sports Centre and Law Primary School, turn left onto Lochbridge Road then immediately right onto Wishaw Avenue from where a path leads to the Law Car Park. From the car park a signed path goes up the west side of the Law. Alternatively, leave the centre of town via the John Muir Way, entering the Lodge Grounds from Quality Street (entrance gate is across the road from Alanda’s Gelateria).
Go East to Canty Bay and find Robert Louis Stevenson’s initials at Canty Bay. Walk to the east end of the East beach and up to the top car park adjacent to the golf course. Follow a grass path alongside the East Links course dropping down to the beach adjacent to the 13th hole. Continue along the upper part of the beach, go round Leckmoram Ness before arriving at Canty Bay. Carved on the landward side of the rocks, just below the large white house (on the left in the photo), are the initials “RLS”. Leave by the steep road leading down to Canty Bay and join the road going towards Tantallon Castle and Dunbar. Return to North Berwick or walk further east passed Castleton and visit Tantallon Castle. On Bus route 120.
Go West towards Fidra and beyond. Walk west from the West beach, passed Point Garry, along the beach and/or edge of the West Links golf course. Then along Broad Sands passing the offshore island of Lamb (owned by Uri Geller) to Yellowcraig beach. Here Fidra, Robert Louis Stevenson’s inspiration for “Treasure Island”, is at its closest. Return to North Berwick along the beach or go inland, picking up the well-signed John Muir Way. If going further west the John Muir Way passes Dirleton Castle (stop at the Castle Inn for refreshments) and then to Archerfield (visit the Walled Garden) before going to Gullane and Aberlady. Some of the walk is on bus route 124/X24/X5, Edinburgh - North Berwick.
